ChatGPT Ads for Ecommerce & DTC brands

ChatGPT Ads for ecommerce brands

Shoppers now ask ChatGPT what to buy. ChatGPT Ads put your products in front of them while they're comparing, not after they've decided.

More and more product research starts with a question instead of a search. Someone describes their problem, their budget and what they've already tried, and ChatGPT helps them narrow it down. ChatGPT Ads let your brand appear in those conversations, clearly labeled as sponsored, with a click through to your own store.

FOUNDER'S TAKE

I spent more than a decade watching ecommerce brands pour money into ads they couldn't measure. The brands that won weren't the ones with the biggest budgets. They were the ones who knew their margin on every product and cut the losers fast. ChatGPT Ads will reward exactly the same discipline.

Campaign plan

Recommended setup

Objective

Start with Clicks to learn which products and messages get engagement. Move proven products to a Conversions campaign once purchases are tracked reliably.

Conversion event

order_created (purchases), tracked with the pixel and, ideally, the Conversions API.

Targeting

Countries you ship to. Product-feed campaigns currently support country-level targeting only.

Starting budget

Enough to reach a few purchases per week per campaign. For most brands that means $1,000 to $5,000 a month to start.

FROM EXPERIENCE

Before you scale anything, know your break-even cost per purchase for each product. If you don't know that number, you're not testing. You're guessing.

Before you launch

Get these right

Landing page checklist

  • Send each ad to the specific product or collection it mentions, not your homepage
  • Show price, shipping time and return policy above the fold on mobile
  • Load fast on mobile: most ChatGPT usage is in the app, and in-app browsers punish slow pages
  • Keep UTM parameters and the oppref click ID through any redirects
  • Use clear product photos and the same claims the ad makes
  • Make checkout work with Apple Pay, Shop Pay or Google Pay where possible

Mistakes to avoid

  • Sending all traffic to the homepage
  • Optimizing for page views or add-to-carts instead of purchases
  • Writing one set of hints for the whole store instead of per product line
  • Advertising products with thin margins before you know your cost per purchase
  • Judging results on ChatGPT Ads' click numbers alone instead of orders in Shopify or your store
