"How much do ChatGPT Ads cost?" is the first question nearly everyone asks. The honest answer: you control your spend completely, but cost per result varies a lot. Here's what's official, what early advertisers report, and how to plan a budget that actually teaches you something.

What's official

  • No minimum commitment for self-serve. Early pilot advertisers reportedly faced a $200,000 minimum. That was cut to $50,000 in April 2026, then removed when Ads Manager opened to U.S. businesses in May (PPC Land, eMarketer).
  • Minimum daily budget: $25 in the U.S. Other currencies have their own minimums, for example €15, £15 and ¥2,500 (OpenAI Help Center).
  • You never pay per conversion. You pay per 1,000 impressions (CPM) or per valid click (CPC). Conversion-optimized campaigns still bill on clicks or impressions.
  • The auction sets the price. With a fixed bid, you set your maximum. With Maximize Clicks or Maximize Conversions, OpenAI adjusts bids within your daily budget.

How billing works by objective

Objective Billing Bid options
Views Per 1,000 impressions (CPM) Fixed bid
Clicks Per valid click (CPC) Fixed bid or Maximize Clicks
Conversions Per valid click (or impression), optimized to a tracked event Fixed target CPA bid or Maximize Conversions

Daily budgets are averaged over a week. A single day can spend up to twice your daily budget, but weekly spend won't exceed seven times it.

What early advertisers are reporting

There are no official industry benchmarks yet, and everything below is self-reported or vendor-reported. Treat it as directional.

Metric Reported range Source
CPM About $60 at launch, falling to about $25 by mid-April 2026 PPC Land
CPC $3–5 most common; under $2 for some; $7–8 in developer software Tru Commerce roundup
CPC, one documented ecommerce account About $1.72 over 15 days Opascope
CTR Roughly 0.8–1.3% in advertiser reports Tru Commerce

Two cautions:

  1. Early prices may not last. More advertisers means more auction competition. Prices that look cheap today could rise.
  2. CPC alone doesn't tell you much. A $5 click that converts at 5% beats a $2 click that never converts. Judge on cost per lead or sale, which requires conversion tracking.

How to size your first test budget

A test only helps if it produces enough data to make a decision. Work backward from the outcome you care about.

Example: a lead-generation business

Assumption Value
Expected CPC $4
Landing page conversion rate 5%
Implied cost per lead $80
Leads you want before judging 30–50
Test budget $2,400–4,000

These are example numbers. Swap in your own CPC from the first week and your landing page's real conversion rate.

As a rule of thumb, practitioners commonly suggest $5,000–10,000 to establish a reliable baseline (Opascope). Smaller tests can still tell you whether the traffic is relevant, just with less certainty.

Tip: Spread your test over at least 3–4 weeks. Spending the whole budget in a few days gives the system less time to learn and gives you a noisier picture.

Ways to control costs

  • Start with a daily budget, not a large lifetime budget.
  • Use an account spend limit as a safety net if your account supports it.
  • Narrow your locations to markets you actually serve.
  • Split ad groups by theme so you can cut what doesn't work.
  • Send traffic to focused landing pages. Better conversion rates lower your cost per result without touching the bid.
  • Change one thing at a time so you know what moved the numbers.

Don't forget the hidden costs

Media spend isn't the only cost. Budget for:

  • Conversion tracking setup (developer time, or a setup service)
  • Landing pages built for ChatGPT traffic
  • Creative: images and multiple ad variations
  • Time to monitor and optimize weekly, or management fees if you outsource
