Legal problems come with a lot of questions: Do I need a lawyer? What does it cost? How long will it take? People now ask ChatGPT first. Since OpenAI's August 2026 policy update, U.S. law firms can advertise in ChatGPT, as long as they're licensed to practice in the jurisdiction where the ad is shown. That makes it a new, early channel for firms willing to get the details right.

FOUNDER'S TAKE

Legal advertising on ChatGPT only opened up in August 2026, so almost nobody has figured it out yet. The early days of a new ad channel are when the lessons are cheapest. I learned that in Amazon advertising, and I'd bet on it again here.

Targeting

Only the states or metro markets where your attorneys are licensed. This is a policy requirement, not just a best practice.

FROM EXPERIENCE

Get your location targeting right before you touch anything else. For law firms it isn't just efficiency, it's a policy requirement: licensed states only.

Before you launch

Get these right

Landing page checklist

  • A dedicated page per practice area, naming the state or city you serve
  • Attorney names, bar admissions and credentials
  • A short, confidential consultation form plus a phone number
  • Clear fee information where possible (flat fee, free consultation, contingency)
  • Any disclaimers your state bar requires
  • Intake tracking so you know which leads became clients

Mistakes to avoid

  • Targeting states where your attorneys aren't licensed
  • Promising outcomes, settlement amounts or "guaranteed" results
  • Combining several practice areas in one ad group
  • Not tracking which consultations become signed clients
  • Ignoring state bar advertising rules because the platform is new
