Context Hints Explained: What They Are and What They Aren't
· 3 min read

If you come from Google Ads, the first instinct in ChatGPT Ads is to look for the keyword list. There isn't one. Instead, each ad group has context hints, and learning to write them well is one of the few real targeting levers you have.
What context hints are
Context hints are plain-language descriptions attached to an ad group. In OpenAI's words, they "provide additional information about the ads in an ad group," describing relevant products, use cases or needs that your creative and landing page may not fully cover.
Think of them as a briefing note. You're explaining to the ad system what you offer and who it helps, so it can recognize conversations where your ad is genuinely useful.
What they aren't
- Not exact-match keywords. There's no phrase match, broad match or negative keyword list.
- Not a guarantee. A hint doesn't ensure your ad appears in any particular conversation.
- Not a replacement for targeting. Location, platform and audience restrictions are set on the campaign. Writing "California customers" in a hint doesn't limit delivery to California.
Specific beats short
The single biggest improvement most advertisers can make is moving from vague labels to specific descriptions. OpenAI's own examples make the point:
| Less useful | More useful |
|---|---|
| Shoes | Lightweight trail running shoes for rocky terrain |
| Outdoors | Water-resistant footwear for wet-weather hiking |
| California customers | (Use location targeting instead) Describe the use case in the hint |
A one-word hint matches everything and nothing. A specific hint describes a real person with a real need.

Book a strategy callA simple formula
Most good hints combine two or three of these:
[What you offer] + [for whom or what situation] + [what makes it different]
Examples by industry:
- Dental: "Invisalign consultations for adults worried about visible braces"
- Home services: "Emergency basement waterproofing for older homes after heavy rain"
- SaaS: "Project and budget tracking for small creative agencies that bill hourly"
- Ecommerce: "Wide-fit running shoes for runners with flat feet"
- Legal: "Flat-fee will and estate planning for young families"
- Local restaurant: "Private dining room for group dinners of 12–30 people"
How to organize hints across ad groups
Context hints live at the ad group level, so structure matters:
- One theme per ad group. Put "Invisalign" and "emergency dental visits" in separate ad groups, each with its own hints and ads.
- Match hints to the ads in that group. If the hints describe emergency visits, the ads and landing page should too.
- Cover the different ways people describe the need. Someone might describe a problem ("my basement floods every spring"), a solution ("interior drainage systems") or a buying concern ("licensed, insured waterproofing contractor"). Write hints for each angle.
You can add up to 2,000 hints per ad group, but you don't need to fill that. Ten to thirty thoughtful hints per theme is a reasonable starting point.
Updating hints safely
When you update an ad group's context hints, the new list replaces the old one. To add a hint, include the full existing list plus the new one. Send an empty list only if you mean to clear them all.
Tip: Keep your hints in a spreadsheet, one tab per ad group. It makes it easy to see what each group covers and to roll back changes.
How to tell if hints are working
Because there's no search-term report, you judge hints indirectly:
- Compare ad groups. Different themes with different hints will show different CTR and conversion rates.
- Check lead quality. If leads come in asking about things you don't offer, your hints (or ads) may be too broad.
- Change one group at a time. Rewrite one ad group's hints, leave the others alone, and compare over the same period.
Common mistakes
- Writing keywords instead of descriptions. "Dentist, dental, teeth" tells the system very little.
- Describing your company instead of the customer's need. "Family-owned since 1987" is a selling point for ad copy, not a context hint.
- Mixing unrelated offers in one ad group. It blurs both the hints and your reporting.
- Using hints for geography. Use location targeting.

Frequently asked questions
Are context hints the same as keywords?
No. OpenAI states that hints are not exact-match keywords. They describe your offering in plain language to help match ads to relevant conversations.
How many context hints can I add?
Up to 2,000 per ad group. You don't need anywhere near that many; a focused set of specific hints is usually more useful.
Do context hints guarantee my ad shows for a topic?
No. They're one input alongside conversation context, relevance and your ad and landing page. They don't guarantee placement.
